DISCOVERY COMMUNICATIONS MAKES A SPLASH WITH NEW APP INSPIRED BY ANIMAL PLANET’S TANKED

Fans Will Get First Look at App on “Tanked” Episode Airing November 29th at 10pm

November, 27, 2013—Discovery Communications and Nancy Glass Productions announced today a partnership with app developer Game Pill, to launch the official Tanked Aquarium Game App. The app, based on the hit Animal Planet series, Tanked, is now available for download on iOS devices like the iPhone and iPad at https://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/id741671891?mt=8.

Following the antics of two brothers-in-law as they run the largest aquarium manufacturing company in the nation, Animal Planet’s Tanked dunks viewers into the high-decibel, family-owned business of Acrylic Tank Manufacturing (ATM). Led by business partners Wayde and Brett, this 13,000 square foot facility, located in Las Vegas, produces some of the most outrageous, larger-than-life and one-of-a-kind tanks for some of the most striking fish and clients around. New episodes of Tanked air Fridays at 10pm on Animal Planet.

Through the Tanked Aquarium Game App, players become the proud owners of a virtual fish tank and will have the opportunity to choose their favorite fish, decorate the tank and above all, keep their fish swimming and happy. Players will enjoy mini-games and can connect with their friends to share their creations via Facebook, SMS texts and email. The app also includes an in-game currency to extend the experience with tank upgrades and more.

Fans can get an inside look at the app from the Tanked stars themselves, Wayde King and Brett Raymer, by tuning into the November 29th episode. The episode, titled “Betty White’s Got an App for That,” features a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the apps creation and Betty White’s first Tanked aquarium.

The Tanked Aquarium Game App joins a growing roster of digital offerings from Discovery Communications that allow fans of specific shows and brands to enjoy their favorite personalities and programming beyond the television broadcast.

Increase App Downloads with a vanity URL

App Marketing with vanity URL’s

Apple rolled out vanity URLs in February 2013, and essentially it looks as follows:

According to the iOS Developer Library, developers can adjust the link (either company name or app name, or app by company) to feature the company’s name:

Or if the developer or company wanted to highlight their entire library of apps, they can use this URL:

Essentially, the appstore.com domain triggers iTunes to open up, and go to the specified app’s page. While you can share the link anywhere that people may look, it can be more powerful if it’s accessed directly through a mobile device (e.g. through mobile advertisements). This is because the URL automatically opens up the App Store on the iOS device, which takes the user to the download page in one click.

The URLs that previously led to iTunes apps were convoluted, vanity URLs are a matter of 20-30 characters (appstore.com/gamepill). Vanity URLs are a method of cutting through the noise and making it possible for developers, publishers and brands to promote apps and for users to discover them more easily.

Best Practices
Most people choose the default domain of http://appstore.com/appname, simply because most people go to it and it’s the shortest to remember. There’s no downside to this option.

The Competition
Competitors can attempt to come up with a name that’s similar or a misspelling, which leads users who mistyped to a completely different page (much like domain names). Similarly, if you want to maximize the opportunity to share your vanity URL on a billboard or a television screen, keep it as short as possible — typing on a mobile device often results in mistakes and less patience for users.

Fortunately, even if there’s a typo, the vanity URL will lead to a search query of that word, and bring up apps with similar titles.

Similarly, much like what we saw with domain names, there could be a secondary market that emerges simply because developers may want to take the stab at taking the best vanity URLs.

Get your App URL today

There’s no downside to getting a vanity URL. It’s a shorter, simpler, and more memorable way to bring consumers to your page on the App Store, especially if they access it using a mobile device. Capitalize on yours and start spreading it so that you can get more app downloads today.

Adding a Parental Gate to Kids Apps

Parental Gating is when features that are really meant for parents rather than the kids who are playing the app are “locked.” The features behind the gate can be in-app purchases, links to buy other apps (cross promotions), links to social media, email, sharing, ads, etc.

The parental gate, which varies in how its implemented, stops kids from easily accessing this information, which if accessed, may lead to unapproved purchases, release of private information, etc.

There are  many ways to implement a gate such as requiring the viewer to hold for a few seconds, presenting a math problem, requiring a specific swipe, or entering a passcode, but the purpose is the same.

Apple now has clear guidelines for app developers:

24. Kids Apps

  • 24.3- Apps primarily intended for use by kids under 13 must get parental permission or use a parental gate before allowing the user to link out of the app or engage in commerce

This requires gating when linking out of the app or engaging in commerce such as selling in-app items.

For a free and compliant option, Floop Technologies offer a Parental Gate for developers that we have been assessing. Check it our for yourself at www.getparentalgate.com
