UI is important!

UI is important!

I have produced many games over the last 20 years and I have to admit that teams and clients often give UI a lower priority due to the fact that development is very iterative and often changes and hence they prefer to finalize UI in later stages of production.

User Interface (UI) design is a critical aspect of game development that significantly influences the player’s experience. Good UI design enhances the gameplay, makes the game more accessible, and helps to determine the commercial success of a game.

WHY UI MATTERS

First Impressions:
The UI is often the first thing a player interacts with. A well-designed UI can make a positive first impression, drawing players into the game and setting the stage for an enjoyable experience. Confusing UI can deter players before they even start playing.

Usability and Accessibility:

A good UI ensures that players can navigate the game easily, understand the mechanics, and access important information without frustration.

Immersion and Experience:
The UI plays a significant role in maintaining immersion. A seamless, intuitive UI allows players to focus on the game itself without being distracted by confusing menus or controls.

Efficiency and Speed:

A well-designed UI helps players perform actions quickly and efficiently. This is particularly crucial in fast-paced games where delays can affect performance and enjoyment.

HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR UI
User-Centered Design:

Design the UI with the player in mind. Conduct user research to understand your audience’s needs and preferences. We did work with Fisher Price and we’re amazed by some of the things we had missed when the children and their parents started testing!

Consistency:

Maintain consistency in design elements such as icons, colors, and fonts. Consistent UI elements help players quickly learn and navigate the interface without confusion.

Clarity and Simplicity:

Avoid clutter and keep the UI simple. Clear labels, readable fonts, and straightforward navigation paths enhance usability. Ensure that critical information is easily accessible and visible.

Feedback and Responsiveness:

Provide immediate feedback for player actions. Visual and auditory cues can confirm actions and guide players. Responsive UI elements improve the overall experience and reduce frustration.

Testing and Iteration:

Regularly test the UI with real users and gather feedback. Use this feedback to iterate and improve the design. Playtesting can reveal usability issues that developers will most likely overlook. It is amazing how much we learn by watching customers interact with the product.

Tutorials:

Provide clear documentation and tutorials for new players. Onboarding processes should teach players how to use the UI and understand the game’s mechanics without overwhelming them.
